i3 Window Manager for RHEL/CentOS 7

Installation Instructions

Minimal GUI using i3 and Lilyterm

For RHEL/CentOS 7 installed from "minimal" package group

Installation

Required Repositories:

• EPEL 7
• admiralnemo-i3wm-el7

Install X11 server and drivers (e.g. for VMware virtual machine):

yum install xorg-x11-server-Xorg xorg-x11-drv-vmware xorg-x11-drv-vmmouse xorg-x11-drv-evdev mesa-dri-drivers

Install lightdm:

yum install lightdm xorg-x11-xinit-session

Install i3, i3status, and lilyterm:

yum install dejavu-sans-fonts dejavu-sans-mono-fonts dejavu-serif-fonts i3 i3status lilyterm

Install py3status—Optional, for additional customization to the status bar

yum install py3status

Install feh—Optional, to set wallpaper:

yum install feh

Set Up

Boot to GUI by default:

systemctl set-default graphical.target

Start GUI now:

systemctl isolate graphical.target
